Restoration efforts for the historic Tanti Hammam in Nicosia are moving forward, with the project’s design team recently meeting on site to discuss the next phase of conservation planning. The discussions focused on technical preparations for the restoration of the historic bathhouse, while also highlighting its architectural and cultural importance within the Ayios Kassianos neighbourhood. The project aims to preserve the building’s original character while ensuring its long-term protection.

Located near the historic walls of the capital, the Tanti Hammam dates back to the early 1900s and reflects the design of a traditional Ottoman bathhouse, built using carefully cut stone. Historical records describe it as one of the first bathhouses in the city to introduce a private family bathing area with a separate street entrance, adding a unique feature for its time. Over the years, homes developed around the site, gradually shaping a small residential community in the area.

Beyond its architectural value, the hammam remains closely linked to local stories and neighbourhood history, making it an important cultural landmark. As restoration plans progress, the project is expected to help preserve one of Nicosia’s lesser-known historic sites while strengthening appreciation for the city’s rich and diverse heritage for future generations.
