The mountainous village of Lefkara belongs to the district of Larnaca and is divided into Pano and Kato Lefkara. The community is built at an altitude of 480 meters at the foot of the south-eastern side of the Troodos Mountain range. Lefkara means "White Mountains" as the village seems to hang from the white mountains. The settlement was a royal fiefdom under the Frankish occupation. Today the village is well-known for the embroidery called “Lefkaritika” in Europe, America and also Australia. The geometric rose patterns in the Lefkarita needlework are reminiscent of the circular windows in Gothic churches.
The village's distinctive architecture is characterized by its stone-built homes, colorful windows, grand wooden doors, and cobblestone streets. The architectural gem of the village is the imposing Timios Stavros church. For those who enjoy the outdoors, a green route connecting Pano Lefkara and Kato Dry is about 2.5 kilometers long and provides a beautiful perspective. One of the village’s most famous dish is the “Lefkaritikos Ttavas” and of course the classic sweet “loukoumia” are loved by many. Legend has it that the renowned painter Leonardo da Vinci visited the community in 1481 and purchased a piece of lace that he later donated to the Milan Cathedral to embellish the Altar.
Despite the fact that Lefkara is a village, it is also very lifeful. Every August, the well-liked Annual Lefkara Festival takes place and features a schedule of performances in the arts, including theater, dance, and craft exhibition. Visitors are welcome to the festival and village to observe the proceedings.
