Kalopanagiotis is a village in the Nicosia district, which is located on the northern slopes of Troodos in the evergreen Setrachos river valley. It is one of the fourteen villages that make up the Marathasa region. The village is the first one encountered when one enters the Marathasa region traveling up from Nicosia. It is located 70 kilometers from Nicosia and 70 km from Limassol.
The region where Kalopanagiotis is located has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the hamlet did not exist until the eleventh century. The community was formerly referred to as the "Village of Panagiotis," but the Franks called it Casale Panayiotis, Kazalopanagiotis. When the name Kalopanagiotis was first used on the official map of the island, the English began to dominate.
Kalopanagiotis, moreover, is also home to two museums, The House of Lavrentios which was the family home of the martyr Lavrentions, and has lately been renovated and turned into a conference and cultural center, and the Byzantine Museum where ecclesiastical artifacts from the monastery and other local churches that have endured through the ages are on display.
