Major upgrade underway for Geroskipou Olympic pool
The reconstruction of the Geroskipou Olympic Swimming Pool has entered its final evaluation stage, marking an important step toward restoring a key sports facility for the area. The project is being treated as a priority due to the pool’s role in supporting sports tourism and attracting international training teams.
The swimming complex has remained closed since May 2022 after serious structural problems were identified, forcing the installation of temporary supports to prevent further damage. The prolonged shutdown has affected the local economy, which traditionally benefits from winter training camps held by foreign swimming clubs and national teams. The facility is now being fast-tracked, with a target to reopen within 2026 and reverse the loss of sports-related revenue.
Planned works focus on addressing major safety and infrastructure issues that emerged nearly two decades after the pool’s original opening. The upgrade includes replacing damaged pool walls with reinforced concrete, repairing surrounding surfaces and drainage systems, restoring waterproofing, and fully renewing electrical and mechanical installations. Once completed, the project is expected to restore safe operation and re-establish the pool as a key asset for sports development and tourism in the region.
