Since 1994, Germasogeia, a Limassol suburb, has been a separate municipality and belongs to the Limassol district. It has a boundary with the towns of Agios Athanasios and the city of Limassol. Germasogeia's coastal region started to expand around 1960. The first plots were split up at the same time to make room for new buildings. The first hotel was erected in 1966 and the first apartment complexes were constructed in the early 1970s. Germasogeia became a prominent tourist destination as a result of this rapid growth. A total of 56 hotels of various kinds were built. Along with the hotel industry, entertainment and leisure services also started to expand, giving rise to hundreds of new businesses.
