Arsos is a village that belongs to the district of Limassol and is located 45 kilometers from Paphos and 40 kilometers from Limassol. It is also one of the largest wine-producing settlements in Cyprus. It is situated 1092 meters above sea level on the Laona mountain slopes, with a clear view of the Diarizos River Valley and the Paphos Sea in the distance. During summer months is has a fantastic environment that is drawing hundreds of tourists, due to its geographic location.
It has grown into a significant, wealthy wine-producing community from the beginning of time and all residents produce their own wine, particularly red wine and store it. They mostly cultivate xynisteri, or dark grapes. The winepress and jars used to make the renowned Arsos wine, as well as the alembics used to make zivania, can be found in most homes.
Two different versions exist for its name. One claims that name originated in the village's location, the Holy Alsos (grove) of the goddess Aphrodite, while the other claims that it was one of the four cities Ptolemy Philadelphos established in Arsinoe's honor. The beautiful colored vineyards around the village, make up a breathtaking view during the warmer season. The housewives are also making a variety of renowned food, such as palouzes, epsima, shoushoukos, kattimerka and other.
What is interesting is that the houses in the village are built near to one another and this is a typical illustration of buildings in villages. What is more, the architecture in the village is made particularly charming with the long buildings (makrynaria), the two-roomed dwellings (dichora), as well as the two-story houses (anoyia). The village is also very green and you can see beautiful flowers and picturesque yards. Moreover, there are two museums available in Arsos, the Fold Art Museum and the Icon Store Room of St. Mariamnis.
The church of Ap. Philippos, traditional coffee shops, a supermarket, a bank, a bakery, community services, a clinic, a bar, and other businesses may all be found at the village square. In the region, Arsos is well known for its numerous events and festivals, each of which has a unique personality. In addition, there is the wonderful Arsos Nature Trail available for hikers to take in the stunning surroundings while hiking on the path.
