Koilani, a village in Cyprus' Limassol district, and is located more than 60 kilometers from Paphos, close to 40 kilometers from Limassol, 90 kilometers from Larnaca, and 120 kilometers from Nicosia. The village is located 800 meters above sea level on a slope surrounded by mountains and vineyards. From there, the Kourris river tributary Kryos flows by, and eventually is forming a waterfall.
It is said that the ancient Arcadians, who migrated to the region during the 11th century BC, are responsible for the creation of the village. As for Koilani’s name, it is believed that it was inspired by specific tribes that were descended from Kyllini. The village once served as the main wine village of Limassol. Today, Koilani is well-known for five wineries that are located here. At the wineries all grape products are manufactured, from Commandaria to zivania, to some of the best Shiraz. Moreover, there are some wineries that produce local Muscat.
The church of Agia Sophia which stands in the village’s center today, was converted into a mosque once. What is distinctive are the customs that are followed in Koilani, which include that every Easter local women paint their doors blue, they weave in their homes, they make embroideries with “papilla” and they also make the famous “eftaloitika” scarves.
The village has beautiful winding streets, charming houses made of limestone with tiled roofs and numerous fountains that once provided residents of the village with water. At the square of Koilani, you can find traditional eateries as well as cafeterias, and traditional workshops where palouzes, soutzoukos kai kiofterki are made.
The church of the Monogenis is located in the settlement, and the Koilani Ecclesiastical Museum is housed there. The Vineyard Museum of Koilani, which is also close by, features an accurate recreation of an early Cypriot home. Every October, a Wine and Grape Festival is hosted in Koilani, attracting many visitors. The Festival of the jar opening, takes place every November and is also very interesting.
