Cyprus tourism is enhanced by the addition of Pissouri and Kalopanayiotis in the top 55 tourist villages

With the inclusion of the villages of Pissouri and Kalopanayiotis in the World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) list of the 55 Best Tourism Villages for 2024, Cyprus has achieved recognition on a global scale in the tourism industry. According to Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, this recognition demonstrates the island's increasing standing as a premier travel destination and supports its potential for further growth in the tourism industry.

The UNWTO Executive Board's 122nd Session included an official award ceremony in Cartagena, Colombia, where the announcement was made. Through social media and international media, the event garnered extensive worldwide coverage, providing Cyprus with a platform for displaying its particular history, culture, and natural beauty.

Koumis termed the accomplishment an important turning point for Cyprus and especially for the two recognised communities in his statement. "This honour strengthens our country's standing in the international tourism arena and demonstrates Cyprus's bright future and present in this field", he said.

The Deputy Ministry of Tourism credited the honour to its strategic efforts, underlining how important it is to identify and support villages that meet the competition's high requirements. Sustainability is given a lot of weight in the criteria, which assess candidates based on indicators such conservation efforts, cultural and natural resources, and the development of environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

This is not the first time the UNWTO has recognised a community in Cyprus. The village of Lefkara also secured a place on the esteemed list in 2021. The ministry reaffirmed its dedication to boosting rural tourism by funding projects that highlight Cyprus's natural beauty and cultural legacy.

The accolade for Pissouri and Kalopanayiotis underscores Cyprus’s ability to offer authentic and sustainable tourism experiences.
