Limassol hosts major coastal cleanup effort
A large-scale coastal cleanup initiative was launched from the seafront of Limassol on Saturday morning, bringing together local authorities, environmental organisations and volunteers in a collective effort to protect the marine environment. The event followed a major maritime gathering held in the city and focused on raising awareness about the growing impact of pollution on coastlines and marine ecosystems.
Volunteers participated in a cleanup of the rocky coastal areas along Limassol’s promenade, highlighting concerns over marine litter and plastic pollution. Environmental experts note that large quantities of plastic waste enter the Mediterranean every day, posing risks to marine life and eventually affecting ecosystems and food systems. Organisers said the initiative aims not only to remove waste from beaches and coastal areas but also to encourage greater public awareness and long-term environmental responsibility.
The event also featured information stands and educational activities focused on environmental protection and sustainable marine practices. Organisers described the cleanup as an important step in strengthening community participation and encouraging collective action to help safeguard Cyprus’ coastlines and seas for future generations.
