New bus stops coming to Paralimni and Dherynia
The municipalities of Paralimni and Dherynia are replacing 186 bus stops with modern facilities, starting on Tuesday. These new stops will feature telematics for real-time bus arrival updates. The focus is on improving the Protaras area first, aiming to replace 72 bus stops before the tourist season begins. The upgrades aim to enhance the travel experience, reduce traffic, and decrease pollution by encouraging public transport use. Additionally, the municipalities are collaborating with Osea, the local transport company, to establish a hub bus station, which they hope the state will support, as seen in other towns.
Cyprus is set to transform its public transportation system through a €61 million contract aimed at building and upgrading bus stops across the island. The project will create 4,450 new bus stops and modernize over 1,000 existing ones, enhancing passenger experience and promoting eco-friendly travel. The plan includes the installation of 2,350 pillars, 350 with integrated technology, and 200 bicycle racks to encourage combined use of public transport and cycling.
Urban and mountainous areas will benefit from 1,350 small and 650 large sheltered stops, with the design focusing on accessibility, energy efficiency, and protection from the elements. The contract also includes a 15-year timeline, with five years dedicated to implementation and ten years for maintenance. Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades highlighted the project's importance for sustainable travel and better public transit infrastructure, making Cyprus's transportation system more accessible and environmentally friendly.
