The most costly infrastructure projects that will begin in 2025

A total of 26 significant infrastructure projects, with a combined estimated cost nearing €1 billion, are outlined in the proposed budget for 2025 and the medium-term financial framework for 2025-2027. These projects, which are either ongoing or scheduled to begin in 2025, are detailed in a table provided by the Ministry of Finance.

The projects listed include those with substantial funding allocations in the budget, but they do not include co-financed projects or those falling under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Government infrastructure spending prioritized

One of the highlights of the second budget presented by the Christodoulides administration is the allocation of €144 million for the implementation of key infrastructure projects. The 2025 state budget, along with the financial framework covering 2025-2027, was officially approved during a special cabinet meeting held recently.

Top 10 infrastructure projects by cost

The total budget for the 26 infrastructure projects stands at approximately €977 million. First in the list is the construction of the New Cyprus Museum, which comes with a price tag of €143.9 million. The second largest project is "KtiZO," requiring an investment of €130 million.

Other significant projects include the Nicosia Courthouse, set to cost €119 million, and the new General Chemistry Department building, which is projected to cost €101.2 million.

The construction of the Astromeritis-Eurichos motorway will cost €88.6 million, while the Pafos-Polis Chrysochous road, which was postponed earlier because of problems with the contractor, will cost €86.9 million.

Additionally, the Nicosia-Paleochori-Agrou road will receive €77.6 million in funding. The estimated cost of building a new prison is €35.1 million, while €30.7 million has been set aside for the development and improvement of Lakatameia and Strovolos' Ippokratous and Argyroupoleos avenues.

The Land Registry and Cadastre Department headquarters, expected to cost €22.3 million, rounds out the top ten.

Lower-cost projects

At the lower end of the budget, the general improvement of the Evriviadeios High School in Larnaca is expected to cost €5.2 million. This is the smallest project on the list but remains part of the government's broader infrastructure strategy.

Exclusions from the list

It is important to note that the figures presented for these projects include VAT and cover those either already in progress or slated to begin next year. However, some projects, such as the new Legal Services building, are not included in the initial cost breakdown. The Ministry of Finance has indicated that the Public Works Department will reassess the budget for this project, although funding is provisionally included in the 2025 budget and the medium-term financial framework.

These infrastructure projects, which constitute a substantial financial investment in public amenities and transport infrastructure, will play a crucial role in determining the development of the nation after the government approves the budget and the framework for the upcoming years.
