Klirou is a village located 26 kilometers southwest of Nicosia on the Nicosia-Palaichoriou Road. The area around Klirou is rich in history, with numerous ancient burials and remnants from the Archaic, Classical, and Roman periods found throughout the region. These findings bear witness to the fact that the area has been inhabited for thousands of years. The village currently has 1,623 residents (World Population Review).
There are two versions regarding the origin of the village's name. According to one version, the village was named after the first settler or landowner in the area, whose name was "Kliros," and the name "Klirou" was derived from the phrase "the region or the property of Kliros." Another version suggests that the name may have originated from the bird "Klorkos" or Kliros because its voice sounds like it is repeating the word "Kliro, Kliro."
The village of Klirou is easily recognizable from afar, with most of the houses situated on both sides of the main street. However, the heart of the village is the impressive church, surrounded by two enormous cypress trees. Another distinctive feature of Klirou is the peak of "Vournia," which reaches an altitude of 717 meters. When viewed from above, the village has an asteroid-like shape with its streets stretching out toward the neighboring villages of Malounta, Fikardou, and Kalo Chorio.
